I've been campaigning for the recognition and good management of volunteers for over ten years. During that time, I have advised various organisations on how to set up, finance and manage volunteer programmes, and have written extensively on the subject. Please see Publications for more information.

As part of this work, in 2002 I created Cultural Volunteer, a free email information service, publishing an issue roughly three times a year. You can read each issue by clicking on the links below. I am currently reviewing the need for and aims of future issues. If you would like to joing the mailing list in the meantime please drop me a line.

  • cv is for arts management professionals who currently involve volunteers in their organisations, and for those who don't, but would like to find out more about volunteers.
  • cv aims to raise awareness of the resource cultural volunteers represent, and how to utilise it effectively.
  • cv actively campaigns for the recognition and progression of volunteers working in arts organisations.
  • cv can help you to better understand the nature of volunteering and how it relates to your organisation.
  • cv will regularly bring to your attention useful information, resources and commentary on volunteering in the cultural sector. Experts on volunteer management will feature, and we will explore topics raised by you in future issues.

Issue 1 - October 2002: In this first issue cv introduces you to cultural volunteering, highlights potential sources for funding your volunteer programme, and focuses on the new Imperial War Museum North's innovative volunteer programme 'Shape your future'.

Issue 2 - December 2002: This month cv brings you Lynn Blackadder on the highlights of Resource's recent research into volunteering in the UK, news of voluntary support from the Big Four accountancy firms, The Egypt Centre's child-volunteer programme 'The Nubies' at the University of Wales in Swansea, and an invitation to join a free e-network for volunteer managers.

Issue 3 - February 2003: This month cv brings you an update on the National Centre for Volunteering's plans for professional development opportunities for managers of volunteers, a report on volunteering culture in the US from Susan J Ellis, further information on voluntary help available from the accountancy profession, and an analysis of volunteering motivations and needs, and how to meet them from Judith Mills.

Issue 4 - April 2003: This month cv is a special recruitment issue. Leading volunteering trainer Rob Jackson tells us how to get ahead in volunteer recruitment, and we provide an overview of organisations that can help you find volunteers, with some simple tips and techniques for interviewing.

Issue 5 - June 2003: This month cv gets philosophical, and reviews current thinking on volunteering and civic renewal. At a more practical level, we'll be looking at the pros and cons of having volunteer agreements, and finding out what all the fuss is about the National Railway Museum's new volunteer advertising campaign.

Issue 6 - September 2003: This month cv hears about volunteering at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and looks at security-clearing volunteers and what you can expect from the Criminal Records Bureau.

Issue 7 - November 2003: cv is one year old and now has 650 subscribers in the UK and abroad. Happy Birthday to us! This month we will be reviewing where cultural volunteering is twelve months on.   We'll also be finding out about London's Shape Ticket Scheme, advertising for Art Fund volunteers, and arguing for the payment of legitimate volunteer expenses.

Issue 8 - February 2004: A belated Happy New Year! and a special welcome to all those new subscribers from museums and libraries in Australia.   This month cv explores how arts organisations can compete with humanitarian charities for volunteers.   We also hear about the volunteer programme at the Cheshire Rural Touring Network

Issue 9 - May 2004: In this issue we consider the ethics of volunteering as job substitution, find out about the new body Volunteering England, hear about a recent report on volunteering and social inclusion, and get an offer of free professional IT help.

Issue 10 - August 2004 : In this issue cv looks into the implications for cultural organisations of the new Volunteering and Social Inclusion report, we hear about CSV's Make a Difference Day, and we ask for your input into the consultation process for the Excellence in Volunteer Management Programme being developed by Volunteering England.

Issue 11 - November 2004: In this issue cv looks at Friends organisations and how to manage them, and we'll be hearing about volunteering from cv subscriber, Streetwise Opera, and the forthcoming Year of the Volunteer 2005.

Issue 12 - February 2005: In this issue cv reviews findings from the Institute for Volunteering Research on the attitudes towards volunteering of young people in England, we learn about the wholly volunteer-run Oundle Museum, and hear about a new free e-book ' Turn Your Organisation Into A Volunteer Magnet' .

Issue 13 - April 2005: This issue of cv is dedicated to managing fundraising volunteers. Find out about the different kinds of fundraising roles, how to ensure volunteers are fit for the job, and learn about the legal issues that will affect their work.

Issue 14 - June 2005: In this issue of cv we hear about the new volunteer programme at the Egypt Centre, University of Wales, Swansea, what cultural volunteering has to say for itself in the Year of the Volunteer 2005, and two new free volunteering reports.

Issue 15 - October 2005: This month cv investigates the benefits of online volunteering, highlights Make A Difference Day on 29 October, and offers some new free volunteer management resources.

Cultural Volunteer is a free information service that is written primarily for a UK audience, but readers from other countries may also find it useful. The information contained in each issue is the opinion of Lynn Blackadder only, and is not given - and should not be read as - legal advice.
