| An independent, artist-led facility, Coventry Artspace Limited is a not-for-profit company which exists to promote, strengthen and support visual arts practice in, and on behalf of Coventry. It does this through its two complimentary programmes: Artspace Artists and Arts Exchange. Arts Exchange conducts participatory and community arts activities across the City, with a particular focus on their use as a valuable urban regeneration and community development tool, creating projects that celebrate Coventry's history and its communities in all their diversity. Artspace Artists offers a support service for practising member artists: managing affordable studio space, providing bursaries, organising commissions, and supporting collaborative working including providing meeting, networking and exhibition opportunities. |

| I worked with Artspace from 2002 to 2007. The company occupies an old Friends Meeting House in the centre of Coventry, the fabric of which had been deteriorating rapidly. I helped Artspace submit a bid to ACEWM for capital development, but we were unsuccessful. We regrouped and applied for organisational development funds to search for alternative premises and to capacity-build the company. We were successful, and the funding led to a subsequent capital bid for the existing building which was match-funded by Coventry City Council, two local private trusts and a local property developer - a total of £300,000. The provided an improvement and expansion to existing spaces and services to artists, communities and other residents in Coventry. |
